The Distribution of Church of England Secondary Schools - Map
Since this map does not refer to LEA boundaries, it was not felt necessary to confine it to the statistics available immediately prior to the advent of the new unitary authorities. It shows the geographical distribution of Church of England secondary schools taken from the January 1999 Department for Education statistics, adjusted for some of the changes made in the Statutory Instrument. It is indicative rather than exhaustive. It distinguishes between secondary aided schools (where the church influence can be at its strongest), secondary controlled and foundation schools (where church influence is probably weaker), and middle schools which take pupils up to 13 only. It also includes a handful of jointly managed Roman Catholic/Church of England schools.
What the map does not include is the very large proportion (around half) of the independent secondary schools which claim a measure of association with the Church of England. Those links, as in the case for example of the Woodard Schools, can be very strong.
If the middle schools are taken out of the picture, apart from strong concentrations in London and the northwest, Church of England secondary schools are few and far between.
